- Otherwise known as Linux! I'd definitely second the suggestion that you try Knoppix. It's amazing at detecting hardware. It detected my wireless router and I was on the net in minutes.

Plus it rescued the entire contents of my colleague's hard disk when Windows 2000 reported a HD error and refused to boot. You must have a copy in your CD library.

To use your useless scanner you might like to give Knoppix a try (http://www.knoppix.org/). This is a bootable Linux CD with automatic hardware detection. You have nothing to install, just boot, scan and switch off.

PC's are such time saving things, aren't they .

To your useless scanner: My father in law installed win98 in a Virtual PC and thus got the scanner working in Win XP pro. Go figure.
